Scripture text (World English Bible)

Yahweh is gracious, merciful, slow to anger, and of great loving kindness. Yahweh is good to all. His tender mercies are over all his works. All your works will give thanks to you, Yahweh. Your saints will extol you. The eyes of all wait for you. You give them their food in due season. Yahweh is righteous in all his ways, and gracious in all his works. Yahweh is near to all those who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.

Reflection

Psalm 145 is a hymn of praise that lifts up the universal goodness of God: kind to all his creatures, near to all who call on him, gracious in provision. For a wedding, it shifts the focus outward: yes, your marriage is being blessed today, but it is being blessed by the God whose blessing already rests on every living thing. Your union is one part of a much larger song.

The psalm's central refrain, "the Lord is compassionate toward all his works", gives married love a generous frame. The love between you is not meant to turn inward only; it is meant to participate in the wider compassion of God. Hospitable marriages, marriages that welcome the stranger, marriages that practice generosity to the poor: these are marriages that live out what the psalm names. Your home becomes one place where God's general kindness becomes visible in particular acts.

Couples drawn to this psalm often share a sense that their relationship is meant to bear fruit beyond themselves. Whether through children, ministry, hospitality, or some other shape of generosity, the marriage is being entrusted with something to give away. The psalm confirms the instinct: this is exactly what marriage is for.

Best for

  • ·Couples with a strong sense of vocation or service beyond the marriage itself
  • ·Weddings that emphasize hospitality, justice, or care for the poor
  • ·Couples drawn to a praise-filled rather than romance-focused psalm
  • ·Liturgies that include extended music and want a psalm that sustains it

In the liturgy

Less commonly chosen than Psalms 128 or 103 but musically lovely. The antiphon "The Lord is compassionate toward all his works" is well-known in many liturgical settings.

Frequently asked questions

Is this psalm specific enough to a wedding context?
It is intentionally broad, placing your marriage inside the universal goodness of God rather than focusing only on the couple. Many find this widening of the lens to be exactly what the moment needs.
