Reflection
When asked which of the commandments is greatest, Jesus answers with two: love God with everything you have, and love your neighbor as yourself. "On these two commandments depend the whole law and the prophets." For a Catholic marriage, this Gospel sets the deepest framework: marriage is not a separate vocation alongside Christian life; marriage is one of the privileged ways the two great commandments are lived out.
To love God with all one's heart, soul, and mind is the first task of every Christian. In marriage, that love is meant to flow into the love of one's spouse, and your spouse is, after all, your nearest neighbor. The two commandments are not competing for your attention; they are reinforcing one another. Loving your spouse well is one of the central ways you love God. Loving God deeply is what enables you to love your spouse rightly. The marriage is the daily school of both loves.
The Gospel is brief, one of the briefest options for the wedding lectionary, but it carries enormous weight. To choose it is to say that the marriage is being placed entirely under the great commandment, and that everything else (the household, the children, the work of family life) flows from there.
For couples who want a Gospel that is short, foundational, and unmistakable in its claim, Matthew 22 is a quietly powerful choice.

- Is this Gospel too short to feel substantial?
- Its brevity is its power. The two commandments are the deepest words Jesus speaks about how human life is meant to be ordered; they need no embellishment.
