The Order of the Catholic Mass
Every part of the Catholic Mass, explained in plain language. Whether you are visiting Mass for the first time, returning after years away, or coming into the Catholic Church through RCIA, this guide will help you understand what is happening at every moment of the liturgy and why it matters.
Introductory Rites
The opening of the Mass — gathering the assembly, calling for mercy, praising God, and praying together.
- Sign of the Cross and GreetingThe Mass begins with the Sign of the Cross and the priest's greeting to the assembly — gathering everyone into the prayer of the whole Church.
- The Penitential ActA brief acknowledgment of our need for God's mercy at the start of Mass — confessing sin in general terms before approaching the Eucharist.
- The GloriaAn ancient hymn of praise sung on Sundays and solemnities — opening with the angels' song at Bethlehem.
- The Collect (Opening Prayer)The priest's opening prayer that gathers ("collects") the assembly's prayer at the start of Mass.
Liturgy of the Word
The proclamation of Scripture and the homily — God speaking, the Church listening, the assembly responding in faith.
- The First ReadingThe opening Scripture proclamation at Mass — almost always from the Old Testament on Sundays, chosen to relate to the Gospel.
- The Responsorial PsalmThe assembly's sung response to the First Reading — drawn from the Book of Psalms, the prayer book of the Church.
- The Second ReadingA reading from the New Testament letters — usually Paul, sometimes the Catholic Epistles or Revelation.
- The Gospel AcclamationThe "Alleluia" sung as the assembly stands to hear the Gospel — welcoming Christ's presence in his Word.
- The Gospel and HomilyThe proclamation of the Gospel by a deacon or priest, followed by the homily — the application of the Word to the assembly's life.
- The Profession of Faith (Creed)The assembly's recitation of the Creed — usually the Nicene Creed — declaring together what the Catholic Church believes.
- The Universal Prayer (Prayer of the Faithful)A series of intercessions offered for the Church, civil leaders, the suffering, and the local community — closing the Liturgy of the Word.
Liturgy of the Eucharist
The heart of the Mass — the offering of bread and wine, the Eucharistic Prayer, and the reception of Holy Communion.
- The Preparation of the Gifts (Offertory)The bringing forward of bread, wine, and the collection — the assembly's offering before the Eucharistic Prayer begins.
- The Eucharistic PrayerThe central prayer of the Mass — thanksgiving, the words of consecration, the calling-down of the Holy Spirit, and the great Amen.
- The Communion RiteThe Lord's Prayer, Sign of Peace, Lamb of God, and reception of Holy Communion — the assembly is fed with the Body and Blood of Christ.
Concluding Rites
The blessing and dismissal — the assembly is sent out to live what they have received.
