Reflection
Psalm 103 is the Bible's great hymn to divine mercy. The selected verses lift up the tender, fatherly heart of God: "as a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him." For a couple beginning married life, this is the psalm that names the kind of love marriage is meant to imitate: not transactional, not earned, but freely given and freely renewed.
Catholic teaching holds that married love is a participation in God's own self-giving love. That is a high calling, and on most days it will look like very ordinary patience: extending mercy, choosing tenderness, forgiving small hurts before they grow. The psalm gives you the divine pattern: God's kindness reaches "from generation to generation." Your marriage is meant to ripple outward in the same way, into your children, your families, the people who pass through your home.
Couples who choose this psalm often have a particular awareness of mercy in their own story: a difficult season, a forgiveness extended, a hard conversion of heart. The psalm sanctifies that experience. What you have received from God, you are now called to extend to one another, and through your marriage to the world.
Best for
- ·Couples for whom mercy is a defining theme in their relationship
- ·Marriages following a season of difficulty, healing, or reconciliation
- ·Weddings where children from previous relationships will be present (the generational theme is gentle and inclusive)
- ·Couples drawn to the merciful, fatherly imagery of God
In the liturgy
Widely known and easily sung. The antiphon "The Lord is kind and merciful" appears in many Mass settings and Sunday lectionaries, so most cantors will be familiar with at least one version.

Frequently asked questions
- Is this psalm appropriate even for very young couples without much "story"?
- Yes. Every marriage will need mercy long before either spouse expects to. Choosing this psalm at the start of married life is a quiet act of preparation.
