The Eucharistic Promise
Catholic teaching holds that the Eucharist is the food of eternal life — the medicine of immortality, the down payment on the resurrection. Every Mass the deceased attended in life was a small participation in the resurrection that now awaits them. These readings name the Eucharistic foundation of the funeral hope: Romans 6's "buried with him through baptism into death" (the sacramental ground), the Bread of Life Discourse in John 6, and the Emmaus story where Christ is recognized in the breaking of bread. Particularly fitting for a funeral Mass with strong Eucharistic theology.
