Understanding the Order of the Mass: A Visitor's Guide
A plain-language walkthrough of the Catholic Mass, from the entrance procession to the dismissal, for visitors, RCIA candidates, and returning Catholics.
A Catholic Sunday Mass runs about an hour. If you've never been, or if you've been away for a while, the sequence of standing, sitting, kneeling, responses, and hymns can feel bewildering. Below is the entire Order of Mass in plain language.
1. Introductory Rites (5-10 minutes)
- Entrance Procession & Hymn — the priest and servers walk in. Everyone stands.
- Greeting — the priest says "In the name of the Father…" Everyone makes the Sign of the Cross.
- Penitential Act — a short prayer acknowledging our need for mercy. Usually "I confess to almighty God…" or "Lord, have mercy."
- Gloria — a hymn of praise, sung or said. Omitted during Advent and Lent.
- Collect — the priest says a single prayer that "collects" the intentions of the gathered people.
2. Liturgy of the Word (15-20 minutes)
Everyone sits for the readings, stands for the Gospel. On Sundays there are three readings plus a Psalm.
- First Reading — usually from the Old Testament.
- Responsorial Psalm — sung back and forth between cantor and assembly.
- Second Reading — usually from a New Testament letter. (Weekday Masses skip this.)
- Gospel Acclamation — "Alleluia" (or during Lent, a different refrain). Everyone stands.
- Gospel — proclaimed by the priest or deacon. You'll see people make a small cross on forehead, lips, and chest.
- Homily — the priest's reflection, usually 8-12 minutes.
- Creed — the Nicene Creed, said by everyone. A statement of the faith.
- Prayer of the Faithful — petitions for the Church, world, sick, and dead. Response: "Lord, hear our prayer."
3. Liturgy of the Eucharist (20-25 minutes)
This is the heart of the Mass: the offering, consecration, and reception of Communion.
- Preparation of the Gifts — bread and wine are brought forward. A collection is usually taken now.
- Sanctus — "Holy, Holy, Holy…" sung by everyone. Kneel after this.
- Eucharistic Prayer — the priest's central prayer, including the Consecration ("This is my Body… This is my Blood…"). Catholics believe the bread and wine truly become the Body and Blood of Christ.
- Memorial Acclamation — "We proclaim your death, O Lord…" Sung by everyone.
- Our Father — said or sung together.
- Sign of Peace — exchange a handshake or greeting with those near you.
- Lamb of God — "Agnus Dei," sung as the priest prepares Communion.
- Communion — those baptized and in communion with the Catholic Church receive the Eucharist. If you're not receiving, you can stay in the pew or come forward with arms crossed over your chest for a blessing.
4. Concluding Rites (2-3 minutes)
- Prayer after Communion.
- Final Blessing.
- Dismissal — "Go in peace." Response: "Thanks be to God."
- Recessional — the priest and ministers process out to a closing hymn.
Common etiquette questions
- Can I go to Communion if I'm not Catholic? No. Catholic Communion is reserved for Catholics in a state of grace. You're welcome to come forward with arms crossed for a blessing.
- What do I wear? Modest, respectful dress. There's no strict rule, but avoid gym clothes.
- Do I have to kneel? Stand or sit if kneeling is difficult.
- When does Mass "count" if I come late? Traditionally, being present for the Gospel and onward counts as attending Sunday Mass.
Taking a program home
If you're attending a specific Sunday Mass and want a program with the day's readings, responses, and hymns, you can generate one here. It uses the readings of the day from the official Catholic lectionary.
