God's Mercy
Every funeral is an act of trust in God's mercy. Catholic tradition is careful not to make absolute statements about any particular soul; it commends the deceased to the wide kindness of God whose compassion is older than the world. These readings name that mercy directly. Psalm 130 cries out from the depths and finds "plenteous redemption." Romans 5 announces that "while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Luke 23 records the mercy extended to the good thief at the very edge of death. Fitting for any funeral, and especially for those where the deceased's life included real struggle.
